These food sometimes categorized as "junk foods" and the recommendation is to be eaten sparingly. All of which is associated with an increased risk of developing certain disease.

To following a diet for healthy life you have to choosing foods that give you the nourishment your body needs in addition to enough calories to fuel your daily activities. This does not mean that you have to give up delicious sweet and fatty foods altogether, but rather that you should eat them  less often.

All food groups contain healthy and less healthy foods, so you should choose the best diet, like whole-grains products over refined varieties, lower fat sources of protein, such as fish, chicken and pulses, rather than meats high in saturated fat and lower fat varieties of dairy foods.

Junk food

Worldwide popularity of junk foods is because their ready availability, advertising and  that consumers find them highly palatable.  Humans have test taste preference for sweets and fats, so sugar and fat arejunk food added to manufactured food products to make them more palatable and flavorful. Recently growing healthy concerns and many foods have been reformulated to lower their fat content, but some of these low -fat biscuit and other foods contain added sugar to improve their taste and appeal to consumers and as a result they contain an even greater amount of calories. It is good to look at the food labels on such products to check their total nutritional content, rather than relying by the manufactures.

Many of these foods provide little nutritional value-hence the term "empty calories" which means that people who eat a lot of them may be overweight, yet suffer from malnutrition.

Chocolate and healthy benefits

Chocolate contains over 300 chemicals, and has been the subject of a number of studies by universities chocolateand other scientific organizations. Chocolate combines a sweet taste with the texture of fat to create a palatable treat whose aroma is one of the most attractive to humans. It is also contain substances that help us relax and improve mood- Cacao, the source of chocolate, contains antibacterial agents that fight tooth decay. Of course this is counteracted by the high sugar content of milk chocolate. There is a biological reason why eating chocolate makes you feel good.  The carbohydrates in chocolate raise serotonin levels in the brain, resulting in a sense of well-being.

Chocolate does provide some nutrients: like magnesium and calcium, also antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

On the another side, chocolate's high fat content can contribute to weight gain and raised cholesterol levels, with their associated health risk. It also contain caffeine, which should be limited.

Consumption of the dark chocolate, but not white chocolate, significantly decreased both systolic and diastolic ambulatory blood-pressure measurements, with both systolic and diastolic blood pressures decreasing during daytime and nighttime. Serum LDL-cholesterol levels also declined in the patients randomized to dark chocolate, whereas white chocolate had no effect on either total- or LDL-cholesterol levels.

Is Alcohol good for  your health?

Alcohol is absorbed in the bloodstream through the walls of the stomach and small intestine. About 5% to 10% of alcohol are being eliminated from the body through urination, perspiration and exhalation ofalcohol air, the rest is metabolized in the liver, where it is converted to acetate. About 15% of the acetate is used by the body to form proteins, carbohydrates, and fats; the rest is used as a source of energy and is later expelled as water and carbon dioxide. Metabolism of alcohol is affected by different factors.

Some studies have suggested that moderate drinkers have a longer life expectancy than both non drinkers and heavy drinkers. Still is not completely clear why moderate drinking  may confer health benefits, but we know about serious health risk posed by excessive drinker.

The benefit of alcohol

Some studies have shown  that if you drink alcohol on a daily bases, you reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular disease. We think that a lot of the benefits of alcohol are on the blood vessels and on blockages in the arteries to the heart and to the brain. This might be related to alcohol's effect on the good cholesterol, the HDL cholesterol. In fact, alcohol affects HDL levels just about as strongly as any other lifestyle factor. People also think that alcohol may lower heart attack risk by acting as a blood thinner. As numerous studies point out, moderate alcohol consumers have a 40 to 50 percent lower risk of having or dying of a heart attack, a protective effect comparable to aspirin. However, moderate alcohol consumption goes aspirin one better since moderate drinkers have at least a 10 percent lower death rate from all causes than do abstainers.

The advice is that if you drink alcohol as two drinks a day if you're a male 65 and younger, or one drink a day if you're a female or a male 66 and older. A drink is defined as 12 ounces (355 milliliters) of beer, 5 ounces (148 milliliters) of wine or 1.5 ounces (44 milliliters) of 80-proof distilled spirits.

Moderate alcohol consumption may provide some health benefits. It may:

  • Reduce your risk of developing heart disease, peripheral vascular disease and intermittent claudicating
  • The risk of a heart attack among moderate drinkers with diabetes is 52 percent lower than among nondrinkers.
  • Moderate drinkers are over 30-40 percent less likely to develop diabetes
  • Moderate drinkers have a 54% lower chance of developing dementia than abstainers
  • Possibly reduce your risk of strokes, particularly ischemic strokes
  • Men who drink in moderation tend to live about two years longer than abstainers.
  • Women who drink in moderation have a 15% lower chance of developing high blood pressure than teetotalers.

The risk of excessive drinking

Drinking more alcohol increases such dangers as alcoholism, high blood pressure, obesity, stroke, breast cancer, suicide and accidents. Also, it's not possible to predict in which people alcoholism will become a problem.

Be cautious because excessive alcohol consumption can lead to serious health problems, including:

  • Cancer of the pancreas, mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus and liver, as well as breast cancer
  • Sudden death in people with cardiovascular disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Fetal alcohol syndrome in an unborn child, including impaired growth and nervous system development
  • Heart muscle damage (alcoholic cardiomyopathy) leading to heart failure
  • Pancreatitis, especially in people with high levels of triglycerides in their blood
  • Alcohol does not contain vitamins, trace minerals or important proteins
  • Alcohol causes the pancreas to produce excessive amount of insulin, which can sometimes lead to hypoglycemia or low blood sugar.
  • Pregnancy problems: Drinkers suffer increased risk of miscarriage and their babies may suffer from fetal alcohol syndrome and other developmental abnormalities.
  • Performance deficits: Alcohol adversely affects attention span, vigilance, coordination, cognitive function and reaction time.

Fatty food like burgers and beef slows down the rate of alcohol absorption, therefore it is important to eat first before drinking alcoholic beverages. Water mixed with alcohol speeds up its absorption in the body, but drinking plenty of water while drinking alcoholic beverages will also hasten the elimination of alcohol in the body.

alcoholThe brain is the organ that is mostly affected by alcoholic beverages, as the blood level rises, the concentration of ethanol in the brain increases. At a blood-alcohol level of about 0.05% resulting from drinking 2 to 3 ounces (60-90 ml) of hard liquor, the drinker's judgment and thinking become dulled. Feelings of anxiety are relieved, the drinker feels relaxed and inhibitions may be released.
Higher blood-alcohol level of about 0.10% produce clear signs of intoxication which includes; clumsy movements, slurred speech, and difficulty in maintaining balance. At 0.30% the drinker is confused and close to unconsciousness.  At 0.45% the drinker may sink into a coma.  Usually at about 0.70% the brain areas controlling breathing and heart rate are affected, causing death. Most people rarely drink enough to raise their blood alcohol level above 0.40% at that level they are usually in a deep sleep and cannot drink anymore.

Also, alcohol interacts with many common prescription and over-the-counter medications. If you combine alcohol with aspirin, you face an increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. And if you use alcohol and acetaminophen, you increase your risk of liver damage. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration requires all over-the-counter pain relievers and fever reducers to carry a warning label advising those who consume three or more drinks a day to consult with their doctors before using the drug. Another important risk, which is unrecognized for many people in this country, is that even moderate drinking among people with hepatitis C may increase their risk of permanent liver damage. Anybody who is known to have hepatitis C shouldn't be drinking any alcohol at all.

The consumption of alcohol can produce an after effect called hangover, it is due to chemicals in alcohol that lingers in the body.
